Storm a-brewin'

I'm not sure if it's common knowledge, or not, but i'm a big fan of rain and storms (except, of course, when I want to go out and play tennis).

My ears perked up just now after hearing some great deep rumblings and a really loud crack of lightning. I took a picture of the apparent storm that's just west of me:

Missing Optical Drive in Windows Vista (Blu Ray/CD/DVD combo)

I found this as kind of odd, so I figured I would post my story about this little adventure. I have a Dell Studio 15 (1535) with Windows Vista SP1. It came with a Blu Ray drive combo that has been working flawlessly until about a few days ago (or maybe longer since i haven't used it in a few weeks) when I noticed that the drive letter to my optical drive was missing. I decided to check in Vista's Device Manager to make sure that the drive was at least still there.

Fortunately, the drive was in fact listed (Optiarc DVDRWBD BC-5600S), but showed that there was an error. I couldn't reinstall the driver for it because there aren't any drivers for optical drives and I couldn't update the firmware from Dell's site because Windows wasn't assigning the optical drive a drive letter. I tried to use Vista's "Check for Solutions" and found that it was completely useless. It didn't even tell me that there was no solution found, it just disappeared on me, perhaps trying to pretend I didn't ask Windows for help.

Well, after doing some searching online, I came across this post which reminded me of the registry hack to remove the Upper and lower filters. Now I've done this several times before on different machines in XP (back in my Geek Squad days) and never had any long term ill effect, but I'm always cautious when I do things like edit the registry to fix hardware devices. I would always recommend to back up your registry (if at least the keys that you're about to delete) first.

These are the steps I took to resolve my problem in Vista:
  1. Open up regedit (as administrator)
  2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  3. Backup/Export the Key (this step is optional but HIGHLY recommended)
  4. Delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters strings (confirming each time)
  5. Restart the machine.
For me this worked like a charm. My drive shows up and reads discs with no problems.

Mollie putting me back to sleep in the mornings

Yesterday I overslept and i solely blame my cat, Mollie. How can she be responsible? Well, Mollie likes to come and lay in bed with me and lull me back to sleep with her hypnotic purring. This happens every morning without fail.

I took this snapshot this morning to give evidence of what she does to try and put me back to sleep. Here she is purring away while she is kneading her favorite soft blanket. If the blanket wasn't right next to me, she would instead jump on my back or chest and purr away. Very hypnotic.

Send your name to Mars!

I thought this was pretty cool: NASA is giving everyone a chance to send their name to Mars via a microchip that will be sent on the 2011 mission.

I broke posterous

This is why i'm a good beta tester, i can break things easily. This only took a few minutes to do.

I tried to import my tumblr blog, which unbeknown to me, is down for maintenance, yielded no imported posts. So i tried to delete the imported posts "because nothing imported" but the dialog never went away, so then i decided to merge the 0 posts in an attempt to get rid of the new blog (full of imported posts, which there were none) attached to my account.

Now it seems my account is broken. (at least the main dashboard).

Death of IE6...finally?

This looks like great news, Youtube seems to be phasing out support for IE6, and for that I give them kudos. It's been a long time coming and long awaited for the developer community that large sites like Youtube (and other sites popular with Mom 'n Pop) force users to use modern browsers because so much time is wasted trying to get features to work correctly with IE6.

As a developer myself, I love this and I can't wait until the day when I never have to consider designing for IE6.
